Construction

Following a competitive tender to ensure the highest standards of quality, the project has been awarded to Breheny Civil Engineering and ECL Civil Engineering. The contractors were selected for their previous experience, performance and local suitability.

The road will be constructed using the latest techniques and materials, providing a smooth and quiet surface for all road users - cars, buses and bikes!

The construction phases are expected to be complete in 2025, and will be carefully managed to minimse disruption to the local community throughout.

Archaeology

Oxford Archaeology and RPS Consulting UK and Irelandhave been appointed by Urban&Civic to carry out all archaeological works across the Middlebeck development, which is a requirement in planning before construction can take place. A significant area of the development has been excavated and investigated. Through these works the team have endeavoured to identify, map, and evaluate archaeological discoveries within the Middlebeck development. This critical stage of the development process has enabled us to uncover and celebrate the rich history of Newark, lots of which will be shared with community groups, young people, and residents of Newark.

This has revealed an extensive array of archaeological remains, demonstrating occupation of various parts of the site spanning the last 10 thousand years or more. Work continues on this exciting project, the results of which should be made available in due course by publication and via Newark Museum.

Economic Impact and Social Value

The impact of the Southern Link Road will go beyond the greater connectivity and convenience for local residents and local businesses.

We will create a new park, cycleways and a care home. We will enrich the area with the planting of 122 new trees. And we will build a modern employment space which will create 5,000 new jobs in the local area.
